Our studies also reveal the monoligated formulation of the Pd0 active species, which led us to synthesize related (eta3-indenyl)Pd-monophosphine catalysts which show improved catalytic performances under mild conditions. A complete mechanistic proposal to aid future catalyst developments is provided.

The crystal structure of [Ir(cod)(L-L)]+ 3 [cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene, L-L = 1-(diisopropylphosphino)-1?-(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene] can be related to those of the analogous complexes with L-L =1,1?-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf) 1 and 1,1?-bis(diisopropylphosphino)ferrocene (disppf), 2, all the complexes being readily synthesized from [Ir(cod)(py)2]+ (py = pyridine). An optimum diphosphine bite angle of approximately 99 is maintained in all three complexes by varying the twist of the ferrocene, which decreases with increasing steric profile of the phosphine, and by distortion of the geometry at the iridium atom away from square planar towards tetrahedral. The twist about the ferrocene moiety induces chirality at the iridium atom in all three complexes and the interchange of stereoisomers can be followed by variable-temperature 1H NMR spectroscopy. Application of the Eyring equation gave approximate values of DeltaG? for this process of 36.1 ± 0.2, 39.3 ± 0.2 and 34.3 ± 0.2 kJ mol-1 for 1-3 respectively. The ligand disoppf also induces considerable distortion away from square-planar geometry in the complex [Rh(nbd)(disoppf)][BF4]4 {nbd = norbornadiene (bicyclo[2.2.1]hepta-2,5-diene)}, as found in a crystal structure determination, which may account for the unusual lability of the chelating diphosphine. This is demonstrated by its reactions with Ph2P(CH2)nPPh2 (n = 1 or 2) both of which give [Rh(L-L)2]+. More surprisingly, considering its lability in [Rh(nbd)(dppf)]+, dppf also readily displaced disoppf from 4, to give [Rh(nbd)(dppf)][BF4] 5. The nbd ligand in this complex is not displaced by reaction with an excess of dppf.

While iron-catalyzed C-H activation offers an attractive reaction methodology for organic transformations, the lack of molecular-level insight into the in situ formed and reactive iron species impedes continued reaction development. Herein, freeze-trapped 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray crystallography combined with reactivity studies are employed to define the key cyclometalated iron species active in triazole-assisted iron-catalyzed C-H activation. These studies provide the first direct experimental definition of an activated intermediate, which has been identified as the low-spin iron(II) complex [(sub-A)(dppbz)(THF)Fe]2(mu-MgX2), where sub-A is a deprotonated benzamide substrate. Reaction of this activated intermediate with additional diarylzinc leads to the formation of a cyclometalated iron(II)-aryl species, which upon reaction with oxidant, generates C-H arylated product at a catalytically relevant rate. Furthermore, pseudo-single-turnover reactions between catalytically relevant iron intermediates and excess nucleophile identify transmetalation as rate-determining, whereas C-H activation is shown to be facile under the reaction conditions.

The infrared stretching frequencies of the carbonyl complexes permit an estimation of the ligand donor properties (basicity) and suggest that the donor properties of ligands 2a-d reside between that of 2g and PCy3. The crystal structures of several [IrCl(cod)(L)] (L = 2a-d) and cis-[IrCl(CO) 2(L)] (L = 2a-d and 2g) complexes are reported and used to quantify the ligand steric parameter.

Several derivatives of the pyrido[1?,2?:1,2]pyrimido[4,5-b]indoles 4 and the pyrazino[1?,2?:1,2]-pyrimido[4,5-b]indoles 14 were synthesized by treatment of the benzannulated enyne-isocyanates 8 with the iminophosphoranes 9 and 13, respectively, for the aza-Wittig reaction followed by thermolysis. The reaction presumably proceeds through an initial formation of the corresponding benzannulated enyne-carbodiimides, such as 10, followed by a formal intramolecular hetero Diels-Alder reaction. Surprisingly, when the iminophosphorane 17 was used for condensation with 8, the expected pyrimido[1?,6?:1,2]pyrimido[4,5-b]indoles 16 were not obtained. Instead, the isomeric pyrimido[6?,1?:2,3]pyrimido[4,5-b]indoles 21 were isolated. Presumably, an alternative reaction pathway involving an initial [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction to form 19 followed by ring opening could lead to 20 and, after an intramolecular radical-radical coupling, 21. Treatment of the urea derivatives 24 with dibromotriphenylphosphorane also produced in situ the benzannulated enynecarbodiimides 25, which on thermolysis gave the isoquinolino[2?,1?:1,2]pyrimido[4,5-b]indoles 26. Methylation of 4a, 14a, and 26a with methyl iodide occurred exclusively at the site of the indolo nitrogen. The planar geometry of those novel heteroaromatic compounds, resembling many DNA-binding agents, makes them potential candidates as DNA intercalators.

In contrast, treatment with 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene (dppb) and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) yields the isomeric products [Ir(pzpyphBu)(dppb)H] (3a) and [Ir(pzpyphBu)(dppe)H] (3b), for which the distinctive, axial hydride undergoes rapid chlorination, forming chlorinated complexes [Ir(pzpyphBu)(dppb)Cl] (4a) and [Ir(pzpyphBu)(dppe)Cl] (4b), respectively. On the other hand, upon extensive heating of 2c, one of its coordinated PPh2(CH2Ph) exhibits benzyl cyclometalation and hydride elimination to afford [Ir(pzpyphCF3)(PPh2R)(PPh2R?)] (5c and 6c) R = CH2Ph and R? = CH2(o-C6H4) as the kinetic and thermodynamic products, respectively. Their structural, photophysical, and electrochemical properties are examined and further affirmed by the computational approaches.
