Heteroleptic Ir(iii) complexes with 3-tert-butyl-5-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4- triazolate chromophore (bptz) and cyclometalating benzyldiphenylphosphine (bdp) or phenyl diphenylphosphinite (pdpit) ancillary (i.e. [Ir(bptz) 2(bdp)] (1) and [Ir(bptz)2(pdpit)] (2)) are synthesized upon treatment of [IrCl3(tht)3] (tht = tetrahydrothiophene) with the relevant phosphine, followed by the addition of 2 equiv. of bptz chelate at elevated temperature. Their photophysical properties in solution were measured, along with the characteristics detected as dopants in thin solid films. For application, organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) were also fabricated using 1 and 2 as dopants, achieving respective maximum efficiencies of 17.8% (44.8 cd A-1 and 46.3 lm W-1) and 9.1% (22.8 cd A-1 and 23.6 lm W-1). In addition, sky blue iridium complex 1 was used with red osmium complex [Os(bpftz) 2(PPhMe2)2] (3) to fabricate phosphorescent OLEDs with a sophisticated red/blue/red emitting layer architecture, attaining a stable warm white color with CIE coordinates of (0.397, 0.411). This white OLED attained an electroluminescence efficiency of up to 18.1%, 39.6 cd A -1, and 35.7 lm W-1 for the forward direction.

Experimental Basicities of Superbasic Phosphonium Ylides and Phosphazenes

Experimental basicities of some of the strongest superbases ever measured (phosphonium ylides) are reported, and by employing these compounds, the experimental self-consistent basicity scale of superbases in THF, reaching a pKalpha (estimate of pKa) of 35 and spanning more than 30 pKa units, has been compiled. Basicities of 47 compounds (around half of which are newly synthesized) are included. The solution basicity of the well-known t-Bu-N=P4(dma)9 phosphazene superbase is now rigorously linked to the scale. The compiled scale is a useful tool for further basicity studies in THF as well as in other solvents, in particular, in acetonitrile. A good correlation between basicities in THF and acetonitrile spanning 25 orders of magnitude gives access to experimentally supported very high (pKa > 40) basicities in acetonitrile, which cannot be directly measured. Analysis of structure-basicity trends is presented.

The effect of ancillary phosphine ligands on the structure and hydroformylation activity of Rh-N-heterocyclic carbene complexes of type [Rh(IMeS)(PR3)(CO)Cl] and [Rh(SIMes)(PR3)(CO)Cl] is described. Nickel-catalyzed reductive Heck type coupling of saturated alkyl halides with acrylates and oxabenzonorbornadiene

The Heck reaction is a well-established transition-metal catalyzed reaction for coupling alkenes with sp2 alkyl halides to give novel unsaturated compounds. Herein we report an analogous Heck-inspired, simple efficient coupling of sp3 alkyl halides with electron-withdrawing alkenes to form reductive coupling products where saturated esters are obtained. A range of acrylates were coupled with sp3 alkyl halides in the presence of Ni(PPh3)2Cl2 catalyst, Zn metal powder, CH3CN solvent, and water, at 80 C to form the reductive Heck type saturated ester products in good yields. This strategy was further extended to couple oxabenzonorbornadiene with the alkyl halides resulting in ring opening to give rise to bicyclic alcohol products. The mechanism for both the reactions appears to be the usual oxidative-addition driven alkene insertion reaction where the water appears to act as the protonating agent.

Novel cationic eta3-methallyl palladium complexes bearing pyridinyl-imine ligands: Synthesis, characterization and X-ray study

Ligands (pyridin-2-ylmethylene)anilines (L1-L4) and (1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)anilines (L5-L6) were obtained by condensation reactions. These ligands react with Pd(dba)2 in the presence of methallyloxytris(dimethylamino)phosphonium hexafluorophosphate [C4H7OP(NMe2)3]+PF6- to give the corresponding monometallic cationic eta3-methallylpalladium complexes C1-C6 in high yields. All new complexes C1-C6 have been characterized by CHN analyses, 1H, 13C, 31P NMR and IR spectroscopy. Solid state and electronic structures of complex C5 have been determined.
