Modular synthesis of triarylmethanes through palladium-catalyzed sequential arylation of methyl phenyl sulfone

Triarylmethanes, which are valuable structures in materials, sensing and pharmaceuticals, have been synthesized starting from methyl phenyl sulfone as an inexpensive and readily available template. The three aryl groups were installed through two sequential palladium-catalyzed C-H arylation reactions, followed by an arylative desulfonation. This method provides a new synthetic approach to multisubstituted triarylmethanes using readily available haloarenes and aryl boronic acids, and is also valuable for the preparation of unexplored triarylmethane-based materials and pharmaceuticals. Synthesis and Application of Planar Chiral Cyclic (Amino)(ferrocenyl)carbene Ligands Bearing FeCp? Group

New cyclic (amino)(ferrocenyl)carbene (CAFeC) ligands containing the Cp? group have been developed as a modification of their prototype Cp version. The generation of the new carbenes was indirectly confirmed by trapping experiments in which a carbene precursor was reacted with sulfur or [IrCl(cod)]2 in the presence of a base. The electronic properties of the new CAFeCs were evaluated by determining the Tolman electronic parameter (TEP) of the Ir dicarbonyl complex [IrCl(CO)2(CAFeC)] that was synthesized via [IrCl(cod)(CAFeC)]. It was revealed that the donor strengths of the new CAFeCs were very high and comparable to those of cyclic (amino)(alkyl)carbenes (CAACs). The influence of the steric effect on the enantioselectivity by changing Cp to the Cp? group of CAFeCs was confirmed to be significant in an Ir-catalyzed asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of cyclic N-sulfonylimine where CAFeCs were used as chiral ligands.

The first general palladium catalyst for the phosphorylation of aryl mesylates and tosylates is reported. The newly developed system exhibits excellent functional group compatibility. For instance, free amino, keto, ester, and amido groups, as well as heterocycles, remain intact during the course of reaction. The mesylated derivatives of biologically active compounds such as 17beta-estradiol and 6-hydroxyflavone are also shown to be applicable substrates. A one-pot phosphorylation-amination sequence is described for the facile synthesis of potential pharmacophores.

In Silico Olefin Metathesis with Ru-Based Catalysts Containing N-Heterocyclic Carbenes Bearing C60 Fullerenes

Density functional theory calculations have been used to explore the potential of Ru-based complexes with 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene (SIMes) ligand backbone (A) being modified in silico by the insertion of a C60 molecule (B and C), as olefin metathesis catalysts. To this end, we investigated the olefin metathesis reaction catalyzed by complexes A, B, and C using ethylene as the substrate, focusing mainly on the thermodynamic stability of all possible reaction intermediates. Our results suggest that complex B bearing an electron-withdrawing N-heterocyclic carbene improves the performance of unannulated complex A. The efficiency of complex B is only surpassed by complex A when the backbone of the N-heterocyclic carbene of complex A is substituted by two amino groups. The particular performance of complexes B and C has to be attributed to electronic factors, that is, the electronic-donating capacity of modified SIMes ligand rather than steric effects, because the latter are predicted to be almost identical for complexes B and C when compared to those of A. Overall, this study indicates that such Ru-based complexes B and C might have the potential to be effective olefin metathesis catalysts.

The first example of a pentacoordinate CoII single-ion magnet based on a P-donor ligand with vacant octahedral coordination geometry is reported here. Thorough magnetic measurements reveal the presence of field induced slow relaxation behavior with an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. The combined theoretical and experimental studies disclose that direct and quantum tunneling processes become dominant at low temperature to relax the magnetization; however, from the thermal dependence of relaxation time it can be observed that the optical or acoustic Raman processes become important to the overall relaxation process.

Diiron propane-1,2-dithiolate complexes with monosubstituted tris(3-chlorophenyl)phosphine or tris(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)phosphine: synthesis, characterization, crystal structures, and electrochemistry

Two diiron propane-1,2-dithiolate complexes with monosubstituted tris(3-chlorophenyl)phosphine or tris(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)phosphine were synthesized and characterized. Treatment of the parent complex [Fe2(CO)6{mu-SCH2CH(CH3)S}] (1) with tris(3-chlorophenyl)phosphine or tris(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)phosphine and Me3NO¡¤2H2O as the decarbonylating agent afforded complexes [Fe2(CO)5P(3-C6H4Cl)3{mu-SCH2CH(CH3)S}] (2) and [Fe2(CO)5P(4-C6H4CF3)3{mu-SCH2CH(CH3)S}] (3) in 82% and 77% yields, respectively. Complexes 2 and 3 have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. Additionally, the electrochemical properties have been studied by cyclic voltammetry.

Catalyst recycling using reactive ionic liquids

The catalyst in homogeneously catalyzed aminofunctionalizations is often difficult to recycle, making these reactions expensive on an industrial scale. The use of dimethylammonium dimethylcarbamate (dimcarb) as a reactive ionic liquid provides an elegant solution to this challenge, as it is a substrate and polar phase at the same time. In this work, homogeneously transition-metal catalyzed reactions – specifically hydroamination, hydroaminomethylation and telomerization – are carried out in neat substrates without additional solvents. The ionic character of dimcarb enables the immobilization of the active catalysts in the reactive ionic liquid, using sulfonated ligands. Investigations regarding the hydroamination of 1,3-dienes led to a total turnover number (TTON) of more than 8,700 with beta-farnesene in 12 repetitive recycling experiments. The telomerization of 1,3-butadiene was carried out over 30 consecutive runs without any loss of activity, resulting in a TTON of more than 90,000.
