Mixed er-NHC/phosphine Pd(ii) complexes and their catalytic activity in the Buchwald-Hartwig reaction under solvent-free conditions

A series of novel (NHC)PdCl2-PR3 complexes were synthesized and fully characterized by 1H, 13C, 31P NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. These complexes showed high catalytic activity toward solvent-free Buchwald-Hartwig amination. Both primary and secondary amines were efficiently utilized under the same reaction conditions. The solvent-free synthesis of valuable N-aryl carbazoles and similar N-heterocyclic systems was described.

We describe the synthesis and coordination chemistry of the (1R,2S,5R)-menthyl-substituted N,N?-diaryl-alpha-diimine ligands N,N?-(2-Men-4-Me-Ph)2-BIAN (L1, Men = menthyl, BIAN = bis(imino)acenaphthene) and N,N?-(2-Men-4,6-Me2-Ph)2-BIAN (L2), the conformational properties of these ligands and their metal complexes, and the ethylene and 1-hexene polymerization behavior of the corresponding (alpha-diimine)Ni complexes. Free ligands L1 and L2 and square-planar (L1)PdCl2 and (L1,2)Ni(acac)+ complexes exhibit a preference for the syn conformation, in which the two menthyl units are located on the same side of the N=N plane, while tetrahedral (L1,2)MX2 (MX2 = ZnCl2, NiBr2) complexes exhibit a preference for the anti conformation, in which the menthyl units are located on opposite sides of the N=N plane. Both the anti and the syn conformers of [(L2)Ni(acac)][B(C6F5)4] can be activated by Et2AlCl to generate highly active ethylene polymerization catalysts (activity (2.5-6.6) ¡Á 106 g of PE/((mol of Ni) h) at 15 psi of C2H4, room temperature). The polyethylene produced by the syn conformer (syn/anti = 91/9) has a higher molecular weight (2¡Á) and a higher branch density (3¡Á) in comparison to that produced by the anti conformer. The polyhexene produced by the syn conformer (syn/anti = 91/9) contains a higher level of chain straightening (syn 50%, anti 41%) and a higher percentage of Me versus Bu branches (syn 24/26, anti 6/53) in comparison to that produced by the anti isomer. These results are indicative of a greater preference for 2,1-insertion and for chain walking (versus growth) following 1,2-insertion for the syn conformer.

NIR absorbing squaraine dyes SQ1-SQ7 having 1H-benzo[c,d]indol-2-ylidene as a donor moiety were designed for application in DSSCs. Annulation of the benzene ring to an 3H-indolium-based anchor moiety led to a red-shifted and broadened absorption band on TiO2 film, which were reflected in the improved short-circuit current density of SQ2 (6.22 mA cm-2) compared to the nonbenzene fused derivative SQ1 (4.39 mA cm-2). Although the introduction of a butoxy (SQ4: 806 nm) or dialkylamino group (SQ5-SQ7: 815-820 nm) to the 1H-benzo[c,d]indol-2-ylidene-based donor moiety resulted in red-shifted absorption maxima in ethanol compared to the nonsubstituted derivative SQ2 (784 nm), the HOMO energy level of SQ4-SQ7 gave rise to an undesirable approximation to the redox potential of I-/I3-. Thus, the butoxy (SQ4: 0.56) and dialkylamino (SQ5-SQ7: 0.25-0.30) derivatives had relatively lower conversion efficiencies. Since the 2-ethylhexyl derivative SQ3 exhibited red-shifted absorption (lambdamax: 796 nm), suitable HOMO and LUMO energy levels, and relatively efficient restriction of charge recombination, this dye achieved the highest conversion efficiency (1.31%), along with a high IPCE response of over 20% over a wide range from 640 to 860 nm and an onset of IPCE at 1000 nm.
