Cu(iii)-CF3 complexes are important intermediates of both synthetic and mechanistic interest. This study describes the isolation, and spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic characterization of CuIII-CF3 complexes 2-4 with typical monophosphine ligands PPh3 and Buchwald-type biarylmonophosphines. Distinct from the ion-pair [P2Cu(i)]+[Cu(iii)(CF3)4]? structures of 2 and 4 (P: PPh3 or SPhos), complex 3 exhibits a novel OH-bridged Ag(i)-Cu(iii) dinuclear structure with XPhos-coordinated linear Ag(i) and square planar Cu(iii) components. This is the first heterobimetallic Cu(iii)-CF3 complex confirmed by both solution-phase NMR spectroscopy and solid state X-ray crystal structure analysis. Complex 3 is found to have the LUMO orbital of major sigma*(Cu-CF3) nature and electrophilic CF3 ligands. Accordingly, complex 3 is able to trifluoromethylate 2 equivalents of aryl boronic acids in up to quantitative yields, regardless of the inert or oxidative conditions. In contrast, the ion-pair complexes 2 and 4 show low reactivity. This study enriches the coordination and reactivity chemistry of Cu(iii)-CF3 compounds and shows the feasibility of modulation of structures and reactivity by ligand design, which may inspire future efforts on Cu(iii)-CF3 chemistry.

A practical palladium-catalyzed cascade C-N cross-coupling/Heck reaction of alkenyl bromides with amino-o-bromopyridines is described for a straightforward synthesis of substituted 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-azaindoles using a Pd2(dba)3/XPhos/t-BuONa system. This procedure consists of the first cascade C-N cross-coupling/Heck approach toward all four azaindole isomers from available aminopyridines. The scope of the reaction was investigated and several alkenyl bromides were used, allowing access to different substituted azaindoles. This protocol was further explored for N-substituted amino-o-bromopyridines.

Compatible combinations of achiral and chiral ligands can be used in rhodium/palladium catalysis to achieve highly enantioselective domino reactions. The difference in rates of catalysis and minimal effects of ligand interference confer control in the domino sequence. The “all-in-one” 1,4-conjugate arylation and C~N cross-coupling through sequential Rh/Pd catalysis provides access to enantioenriched dihy-droquinolinone building blocks.

Highly selective tandem nucleophilic addition/cross-coupling reactions of alkynes have been developed using visible-light-promoted dual gold/photoredox catalysis. The simultaneous oxidation of AuI and coordination of the coupling partner by photo-generated aryl radicals, and the use of catalytically inactive gold precatalysts allows for high levels of selectivity for the cross-coupled products without competing hydrofunctionalization or homocoupling. As demonstrated in representative arylative Meyer-Schuster and hydration reactions, this work expands the scope of dual gold/photoredox catalysis to the largest class of substrates for gold catalysts and benefits from the mild and environmentally attractive nature of visible-light activation. United we stand! Tandem nucleophilic addition/cross-coupling reactions have been developed with challenging alkynes using a visible-light-promoted dual gold/photoredox catalytic system (see scheme). High levels of selectivity for the cross-coupled products were obtained without competition from the homocoupling or conventional hydrofunctionalization.

We describe a palladium-catalyzed chemoselective Negishi cross-coupling of a bis[(pinacolato)boryl]methylzinc halide with aryl (pseudo)halides. This reaction affords an array of benzylic 1,1-diboronate esters, which can serve as useful synthetic handles for further transformations. The developed coupling reaction is compatible with various functional groups and can be easily scaled up. The coupling of bis[(pinacolato)boryl]methylzinc halides with pharmaceuticals and the subsequent late-stage manipulations demonstrate the power of the developed protocol.

A palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling between in situ generated allenyl/propargyl-lithium species and aryl bromides to yield highly functionalized allenes is reported. The direct and selective formation of allenic products preventing the corresponding isomeric propargylic product is accomplished by the choice of SPhos or XPhos based Pd catalysts. The methodology avoids the prior transmetalation to other transition metals or reverse approaches that required prefunctionalization of substrates with leaving groups, resulting in a fast and efficient approach for the synthesis of tri- and tetrasubstituted allenes. Experimental and theoretical studies on the mechanism show catalyst control of selectivity in this allene formation.
