A decarboxylative coupling reaction with an alkynyl carboxylic acid and aryl iodides in the presence of a nickel catalyst was developed. When the reaction was conducted with NiCl2 (10 mol%), Xantphos (15 mol%), Mn (1.0 equiv), and Cs2CO3 (1.5 equiv), the desired diaryl alkynes were formed in moderated to good yields. Furthermore, this method does not produce the diyne, which is formed in the homocoupling of alkynyl carboxylic acids.

(Chemical Equation Presented) Palladium-catalyzed arylation of sulfenate anions generated from beta-sulfinyl esters can take place under biphasic conditions. This hitherto unknown reaction provides a simple, mild, and efficient route to aryl sulfoxides in good yields. The development of a new pseudo-domino type I procedure involving a sulfinylation followed by a Mirozoki-Heck coupling is also described.

Palladium(II) dialkyl complexes have previously been studied for their formation of alkanes through reductive elimination. More recently, these complexes, especially L2Pd(CH2TMS)2 derived from Pd(COD)(CH2TMS)2, have found general use as palladium(0) precursors for stoichiometric formation of oxidative addition complexes through a two-electron reductive elimination/oxidative addition sequence. Herein, we report evidence for an alternative pathway, proceeding through single-electron elementary steps, when DPEPhosPd(CH2TMS)2 is treated with an alpha-bromo-alpha,alpha-difluoroacetamide. This new pathway does not take place through a palladium(0) intermediate, neither does it afford the expected oxidative addition complexes. Instead, stoichiometric amounts of carbon-centered alkyl radicals are formed, which can be trapped in high yields either by TEMPO or by an arene, leading to alpha-aryl-alpha,alpha-difluoroacetamides. The same overall transformation takes place under both thermal conditions (70 C) and irradiation with a household light bulb (at 30 C). It is also demonstrated that DPEPhosPdMe2, made in situ from Pd(TMEDA)Me2, displays a similar initial reactivity. Finally, electronically and structurally different alkyl bromides were evaluated as reaction partners.

Although xantphos has been employed in a variety of palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, there has been little progress in developing Xantphos-ligated precatalysts. In this report, we describe a Xantphos-ligated palladium dialkyl complex that acts as a powerful precatalyst for C-N, C-S, and C-C cross-coupling reactions. This precatalyst is air- and moisture stable but can be thermally activated in the absence of external reagents. Additionally, potential catalyst inhibitors are not generated during the precatalyst activation. This complex thus represents a convenient alternative to previously reported classes of Xantphos-ligated precatalysts.

“Chemical equation presented” Heteroarenes are important structural moieties in many chemical industry fields. A highly efficient Pd/Cu-catalyzed C-H arylation method for a range of heterocycles has been discovered. It was found that the key to the success of this transformation is a combination of a palladium catalyst and a well-defined copper cocatalyst. The efficiency and low loadings of catalyst (0.25 mol %) and cocatalyst (1 mol %) together with the mild reaction conditions demonstrate this method to be practically useful and mechanistically interesting.

While carbon monoxide (CO) gas has been extensively applied in the bulk chemical industry, its intrinsic properties such as high toxicity, flammability, and special equipment requirement for handling, limit its utilization in organic synthesis, fine chemical industry and academia. Recently, considerable effort has been devoted to the development of CO surrogates to avoid the direct use of carbon monoxide gas. Among the various CO surrogates, formic acid and formaldehyde, have a broad range of applications in organic synthesis. The direct carbonylation with formic acid (HCOOH) and formaldehyde (HCHO) represents one of the most atom-economical substitutes owing to their high weight percentage of CO. In this review, the potential roles of both formic acid and formaldehyde in transition-metal catalyzed carbonylation reactions are discussed. In order to understand these transfer carbonylation reactions, the mechanistic rationale for representative examples is also provided.

Vicinal amino alcohols are important structural motifs of bioactive compounds. Reported herein is an efficient method for their synthesis based on the palladium-catalyzed oxy-alkynylation, oxy-arylation, or oxy-vinylation of allylic amines. High regio- and stereoselectivity were ensured through the in situ formation of a hemiaminal tether using the cheap commercially available trifluoroacetaldehyde in its hemiacetal form. The obtained compounds are important building blocks, which can be orthogonally deprotected to give either free alcohols, amines, or terminal alkynes.
