Tuberculosis (TB), a disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), is a global public health concern because of the emergence of various resistant strains. Benzothiazin-4-ones (BTZs), represented by BTZ043, are a promising new class of agents for the treatment of tuberculosis and have been shown to kill Mtb in vitro, ex vivo, and in mouse models of TB. Herein we report the design and syntheses of nitroaromatic sulfonamide, reverse-amide, and ester classes of anti-TB agents using a scaffold simplification strategy based on BTZ043. The presented work explores the effect of functional groups such as sulfonamides, reverse-amides, and esters that are attached to the nitroaromatic rings on their anti-TB activity. The in vitro activity of the compounds evaluated against the H37Rv strain of Mtb show that nitroaromatic sulfonamides and nitrobenzoic acid esters with two nitro substituents were most active and highlights the importance of the electronic character (electron deficient aromatic ring) of the nitroaromatic ring as a central theme in these types of nitroaromatic anti-TB agents.

We designed and synthesized dimeric imidazo[1, 5-a]pyridines possessing various aryl groups at 1,1?-positions. The solution of these derivatives exhibited fluorescence emission in wavelength range of 487?512 nm. The fluorescence emissions were slightly red-shifted under acidic condition by addition of trifluoroacetic acid. Furthermore, the original fluorescence spectra were observed after the addition of triethylamine as a base.

Oxidative direct arylation polymerization has recently emerged as a simple, mild, and atom economical homopolymerization method; however, the application of this promising method to unsymmetrical or binary monomer systems, where different C-H reactivities are present, is limited. Through refinement of the reaction parameters and minimization of auxiliary reagent loadings, polymers with good molecular weights are achieved and the feed ratio is closely correlated to the polymer composition. These random copolymers are evaluated by 1H NMR, SEC, UV-Vis, GIXRD, and SCLC hole mobility analyses to determine the compatibility of this emerging synthetic method with increasingly popular random copolymer architectures.

Three near-infrared (NIR) absorbing unsymmetrical perylene diimide D-A-D type dyes containing 6-undecanoxy as donor group were utilized in dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cells. Structure of the acceptor side of the molecules were improved by adding 4-[2-methyl-5-(cyanoacrylic acid)-3-thienyl]-phenyl (V), 3-carboxy-2-pyridil (VI) and 3-carboxy-2-pyrazyl (VII) moieties attached to one of the N-side of the dye. The relationship between the molecular structure of the acceptor sites of the dyes and the photovoltaic performances were discussed. Electrochemical measurements indicated that band gaps of the dyes were energetically favorable for electron injection from the excited state of the dyes to the conduction band of TiO2 nanoparticles. However, three dyes gave lower conversion efficiency on DSSC applications. Strong electron-withdrawing nature of perylene core might not permit to transfer the photo-generated electrons to the carboxyl groups anchoring to TiO2 surface, and then solar-to-electricity conversion efficiencies of the dyes were reduced.
