Abstract 2-Substituted 7-azaindoles are rapidly and efficiently prepared in a one-pot copper-free alkynylation-cyclization sequence starting from 2-aminopyridyl halides and terminal alkynes. Most importantly the amino nitrogen atom neither requires activation nor protection throughout the sequence.

By functionalizing the privileged biphenyl-2-ylphosphine with a basic amino group at the rarely explored 3? position, the derived gold(I) complex possesses orthogonally positioned “push” and “pull” forces, which enable for the first time soft propargylic deprotonation and permit the bridging of a difference of >26 pKa units (in DMSO) between a propargylic hydrogen and a protonated tertiary aniline. The application of this design led to efficient isomerization of alkynes into versatile 1,3-dienes with synthetically useful scope under mild reaction conditions.

A straightforward synthesis of cyclopropenylidene-stabilized phosphenium cations 1 a-g through the reaction of [(iPr2N)2C 3+Cl]BF4 with secondary phosphines is described. Their donor ability was evaluated by analysis of the CO stretching frequency in Rh complexes [RhCl(CO)L2](BF4)2 and electrochemical methods. The cyclopropenium ring induces a phosphite-type behavior that can be tuned by the other two substituents attached to the phosphorus atom. Despite of the positive charge that they bear, phosphenium cations 1 a-g still act as two-electron donor ligands, forming adducts with PdII and PtII precursors. Conversely, in the presence of Pd0 species, an oxidative insertion of the Pd atom into the C carbene-phosphorus bond takes place, providing dimeric structures in which each Pd atom is bonded to a cyclopropenyl carbene whi Copyright

Aqueous-biphasic catalysis offers the potential for safer and more environmentally sustainable synthetic processes. In addition, hydrophilic supporting ligands allow homogeneous catalysts to be readily separated from organic products and potentially reused. The synthesis of two new water-soluble ligand precursors, di-tert-butyl(4-sulfonatobenzyl)phosphonium and di-1-adamantyl(4-sulfonatobenzyl)phosphonium, are reported. The air-stable, zwitterionic phosphonium salts were prepared by the reaction of dialkylphosphines with ethyl 4-bromomethylbenzenesulfonate, which results in a one-pot alkylation followed by deprotection of the ethyl sulfonate. This methodology provides an operationally simpler route to sulfonated benzylphosphines than electrophilic sulfonation. The new phosphine ligands were applied to aqueous-phase Suzuki and Sonogashira couplings of aryl bromides.

We have prepared a series of new rhenium complexes containing chiral ferrocenyldiphosphane ligands of the Josiphos family, starting from commercially available rhenium sources. These new ReV oxido and nitrido complexes, several of which have been characterized by X-ray crystallography, are air- and moisture-stable and are active catalysts in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of ketones using 2-propanol as the hydrogen source in the presence of substoichiometric amounts of triethylamine (TEA). The reaction proceeds cleanly with good to excellent yields (50-99 %) but with moderate enantioselectivity (up to 58 % ee). A mechanism not involving hydridic species is proposed.

A highly enantioselective intermolecular hydrophosphination reaction is described. The (Pigiphos)-nickel(II)-catalyzed reaction of secondary phosphines and methacrylonitrile gives chiral 2-cyanopropylphosphines in good yield and high enantiomeric excess (ee’s up to 94%; (R)-(S)-Pigiphos = bis{(R)-1-[(S)-2-(diphenylphosphino)ferrocenyl]ethyl}cyclohexylphos phine). We propose a mechanism involving coordination of methacrylonitrile to the dicationic nickel catalyst followed by 1,4-addition of the phosphine, and then, rate-determining proton transfer. This mechanism is supported by (a) the experimentally determined rate law (rate = K[Ni][methacrylonitrile][t-Bu 2PH]), (b) a large primary deuterium isotope effect K H/KD = 4.6(1) for the addition of t-Bu2PH(D) at 28.3C in toluene-d8, (c) the isolation and characterization of the species [Ni(K3-Pigiphos)(KN-methacrylonitrile)]2+, and (d) DFT calculations of model compounds.

A newly developed P,N-bidentate ligand enables enantioselective intramolecular cyclopropanation by a reactive alpha-oxo gold carbene intermediate generated in situ. The ligand design is based on our previously proposed structure (with a well-organized triscoordinated gold center) of the carbene intermediate in the presence of a P,N-bidentate ligand. A C2-symmetric piperidine ring was incorporated in the ligand as the nitrogen-containing moiety. A range of racemic transformations of alpha-oxo gold carbene intermediates have been developed recently, and this new class of chiral ligands could enable their modification for asymmetric synthesis, as demonstrated in this study.

Reductive eliminations to form alkyl-nitrogen bonds are rare, and examples of this reaction from isolated complexes containing simple, unstabilized primary alkyl groups have not been observed. We report the synthesis of stable neopentylpalladium(II) anilido and methyleneamido complexes that undergo reductive elimination to form the C(sp3)-N bonds in N-neopentyl anilines and N-neopentyl imines, respectively. The synthesis and isolation of these complexes were enabled by weak chelation of palladium by P,O ancillary ligands. DFT calculations suggest that neopentylpalladium(II) complexes undergo reductive elimination by a concerted mechanism resembling a migration of the alkyl ligand to the nitrogen either following initial dissociation of the oxygen donor or in concert with lengthening of the Pd-O bond, depending on the identities of the reacting and ancillary ligands.
