Efficient bulky phosphines for the selective telomerization of 1,3-butadiene with methanol

A series of bulky phosphines containing substituted biphenyl, 2-methylnaphthyl, or 2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene moiety were prepared. They were used in the preparation of new monophosphine-palladium(0)- dvds complexes, which were employed as catalysts for the selective telomerization of 1,3-butadiene with methanol to obtain 1-methoxyocta-2,7-diene (1-MOD), the key intermediate in the Dow 1-octene process. Several ligands showed improved selectivity and yield compared to that of the benchmark ligand PPh3. Especially 2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthen-4-yl- diphenylphosphine (4, “mono-xantphos”) stands out as an excellent ligand in terms of yield, selectivity, and stability.

Variation of xantphos-based ligands in the palladium-catalyzed reaction of aryl halides with ureas

A series of Xantphos-based ligands containing various substituents in the diphenylphosphino groups were synthesized, and their effect on the product yield and ratio in the palladium-catalyzed arylation of ureas with nonactivated aryl halides was studied. The arylation of urea and phenylurea in the presence of Pd2(dba)3-CHCl3, 3,5-(CF3) 2Xantphos, and Cs2CO3 in dioxane at 100C gave the corresponding N,N?-diarylureas in 62-98% yield.

Water Soluble Phosphanes, XIV [1]. Hydrophilic Derivatives of Triphenylphosphane with NH2, COOH and P(O)(OR)2 Functionalized Side Chains

Nucleophilic phosphanylation of ortho-fluorophenylacetic acid or ortho-fluorobenzylamine with PhPH2 using KOtBu as the base affords the hydrophilic tertiary phosphanes 3 and 4a with terminal CH2-COOH and CH2-NH2 substituents. The corresponding secondary phosphane ligands 2 or 5 may be obtained by Pd-catalyzed P-C coupling of ortho-iodophenylacetic acid with PhPH2 or selective nucleophilic phosphanylation of ortho-fluorophenylacetic acid. Novel phosphonatomethyl derivatives 7a, 7b of triphenylphosphane have been obtained in a two stage synthesis using ortho-iodobenzylchloride or meta-iodobenzylbromide as starting materials. Arbusov reaction with P(OEt)3 and Pd-catalyzed P-C coupling reactions with Ph2PH gave the esters 7a, 7b. Purification of 7a was achieved via its BH3 adduct 8a. Deprotection, hydrolysis and neutralisation with NaOH affords the water soluble sodium salts 9a,9b. alpha-Hydroxy and alpha-benzylamino derivatives 12 and 14 of ortho-diphenylphosphanobenzyl phosphonate (e.g. 7a) and the corresponding Me2P(O) analogs 13 and 16 are accessible in a straightforward manner by addition of (MeO)2P(O)H or Me2P(O)H to ortho-phosphanobenzaldehyde 11a or its benzaldimino derivative 15, respectively. An improved synthesis for 11a-11c has been developed. Reaction of 11a with the Wittig reagent Ph3P=C(H)COOEt and subsequent hydrolysis of the intermediate ester 17a affords ortho-diphenylphosphano cinnamic acid 17. The catalytical activity of 1, 9a, 9b and related ligands in Suzuki-type coupling reactions has been investigated.

Synthesis and Catalytic Applications of a Triptycene-Based Monophosphine Ligand for Palladium-Mediated Organic Transformations

1-Methoxy-8-(diphenylphosphino)triptycene (1), featuring high structural rigidity and steric bulkiness around the phosphine functionality, was synthesized as a new chiral monophosphine ligand for transition metal-catalyzed reactions. In the presence of 5-10 mol ppm (i.e., 0.0005-0.001 mol %) Pd(OAc)2 and 1 (2 equiv for Pd), Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of aryl bromides and arylboronic acids proceeded effectively under mild atmospheric conditions to give the corresponding biaryl compounds in a high yield. The single-crystal X-ray analysis of a Pd(II) complex of 1 revealed its coordination structure, in which two homochiral molecules form a dimer, suggesting that triptycene could provide a chiral environment for asymmetric organic transformations. In fact, optically active 1 obtained by optical resolution showed good enantioselectivity in the palladium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrosilylation of styrene, which represents, for the first time, the asymmetric catalytic activity of triptycene-based monophosphine ligands.

2-Diphenylphosphinobenzaldehyde as chelating ligand in trimethylphosphine complexes of cobalt and nickel

Methylnickel complexes activate the C(O)-H function of 2-diphenylphosphinobenzaldehyde to form five-membered chelate rings Ni(Ph2P?C=O) which occupy OC-axial and P-equatorial positions in the trigonal bipyramidal configuration of nickel(d8) compounds Ni(Ph2P?C= O)X(PMe3)2 (X = Cl (1), Br (2), I (3), Me (4)). Methylcobalt complexes react with 2-diphenylphosphinobenzaldehyde to afford an isoelectronic species Co(Ph2P?C=O)(PMe3)3 (5) of similar configuration, while cobalt halides CoX(PMe3)3 oxidatively add the aldehyde function to produce octahedral compounds mer-CoH(X)(Ph2P?C=O)(PMe3)2 (X = Cl (6), Br (7), I (8)). Carbon monoxide replaces an axial trimethylphosphine in 5, while iodomethane gives rise to an oxidative substitution producing CoI(Ph2P?C=O)(PMe3)2 (10) (17 valence electrons). The molecular structures of compounds 3, 5, 6, and 10 have been solved by X-ray crystallography.

Transition-metal Chemical Shifts in Complexes of Molybdenum(0) and Tungsten(0)

Molybdenum-95 and tungsten-183 n.m.r. spectra have been measured by direct observation and by multiple-resonance methods respectively for 65 related derivatives of and with (mainly) phosphorus ligands. The chemical shifts of the two nuclei are remarkably parallel, those for (183)W being ca. 1.7 times more sensitive to changes in chemical environment than those for (95)Mo.The chemical shifts are temperature-dependent, and trends in them can be largely accounted for by variations in the mean electronic excitation energy. The metal-phosphorus spin-coupling constants are very predictable.Molybdenum-95 linewidths in many cases are quite small, and can be broadly explained by the use of a point-charge model.
