[PF6] and [Cu(xantphos)(N^S)][PF6] compounds with 2-(thiophen-2-yl)pyridines

A series of [Cu(POP)(N^S)][PF6] and [Cu(xantphos)(N^S)][PF6] compounds (POP = bis(2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl)ether, xantphos = 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene) in which the N^S ligand is a 2-(thiophen-2-yl)pyridine (1), 2-(thiophen-2-yl)-6-methylpyridine (2), 2-(5-methylthiophen-2-yl)pyridine (3) or 2-(5-methylthiophen-2-yl)-6-methylpyridine (4) have been prepared and characterized in solution and the solid state. Single crystal structures of [Cu(POP)(1)][PF6], [Cu(xantphos)(1)][PF6], [Cu(xantphos)(2)][PF6], [Cu(POP)(3)][PF6]¡¤CH2Cl2, and [Cu(xantphos)(4)][PF6] confirm chelating N^S and P^P ligands, and distorted tetrahedral copper(i) centres. There is close cation?anion association, particularly in [Cu(xantphos)(1)][PF6]. Although the compounds are stable over days in CH2Cl2 solution, they are susceptible to the effects of competing ligands such as chloride ion and MeCN. Analysis of the NMR spectroscopic data of a solution of [Cu(POP)(3)][PF6] with added Cl-, gives a Kd value of 0.14 ¡À 0.03 mM, indicative of ion-pairing. [Cu(POP)(N^S)][PF6] and [Cu(xantphos)(N^S)][PF6] exhibit quasi-reversible or irreversible Cu+/Cu2+ oxidations. They are blue emitters in solution, and the presence of the 5-methyl group in the thiophene ring in 3 and 4 leads to a red-shift in the emission. The highest photoluminescence quantum yields are for [Cu(POP)(2)][PF6] (30.8%) and [Cu(POP)(4)][PF6] (33.2%), both of which have a 6-methyl-substituted pyridine ring in the N^S ligand. Excited-state lifetimes are <5 ns. On going from solution to powder samples, red-shifts of 133 to 163 nm are observed leading to yellow emitters. The brightest emitter, [Cu(xantphos)(1)][PF6], was tested in a LEC device but showed poor electroluminescence and poor charge transporting characteristics. Reactions of complex (mu-SCH2CH2S-mu)Fe2(CO)6(D) with tris(4-fluorophenyl)phosphine or 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaldehyde in the presence of Me3NO¡¤2H2O afforded complexes (mu-SCH2CH2S-mu)Fe2(CO)5[P(4-C6H4F)3] (1) and (mu-SCH2CH2S-mu)Fe2(CO)5[Ph2P(2-C6H4CHO)] (2) in 84 and 88% yields, respectively, whereas complexes [mu-SCH(CH3)CH(CH3)S-mu]Fe2(CO)5[P(4-C6H4CH3)3] (3) and [mu-SCH(CH3)CH(CH3)S-mu]Fe2(CO)5[P(2-C4H3O)3] (4) were obtained by the reactions of complex [mu-SCH(CH3)CH(CH3)S-mu]Fe2(CO)6(E) with tris(4-methylphenyl)phosphine or tris(2-furyl)phosphine in 64 and 65% yields, respectively. The new complexes 1?4 were structurally characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

A novel series of 4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-benzimidazole derivatives 4, 5, 6 and 7 was prepared and evaluated for activities as 5-hydroxytryptamine (5- HT3) receptor antagonists which may be useful for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) as well as nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy. These compounds were designed by modifying the aromatic- carbonyl part of N-(2-methoxyphenyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-5- benzimidazolylcarboxamide 3, leaving the imidazole moiety unchanged as the amine part. The indole derivatives 7d, g, h and indolizine derivatives 7k, 1 were found to be highly potent on the von Bezold-Jarisch (B.J.) reflex test with ID50 values of below 0.1 mug/kg, and the indoline derivative 6c, indole derivatives 7a, d, g, benzofurane derivative 7j and indolizine derivative 7k were observed to be very potent on the colonic contraction with IC50 values of below 0.1 muM. In particular, 71 was the most potent on the B.J. reflex (ID50 = 0.018 mug/kg), approximately 200 and 50 times more potent than ondansetron 1 and granisetron 2, and 7k was the most potent on the colonic contraction (IC50 = 0.011 muM), approximately 70 and 6 times more potent than 1 and 2, respectively.

Novel chiral multidentate P3N4-type ligand has been synthesized and characterized by NMR and HRMS. Using i-PrOH as solvent and hydrogen source, asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of various ketones was investigated. The catalyst generated in situ from chiral multidentate aminophosphine ligand (R,R,R,R)-3 and IrCl(CO)(PPh3)2exhibited highly catalytic activity and excellent enantioselectivity under mild conditions, achieving the corresponding chiral alcohols with up to 99% yield and 99% ee.

Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions of aryl and heteroaryl halides with aryl-, heteroaryl- and vinylboronic acids proceed in very good to excellent yield with the use of 2-(2?,6?-dimethoxybiphenyl) dicyclohexylphosphine, SPhos (1). This ligand confers unprecedented activity for these processes, allowing reactions to be performed at low catalyst levels, to prepare extremely hindered biaryls and to be carried out, in general, for reactions of aryl chlorides at room temperature. Additionally, structural studies of various 1¡¤Pd complexes are presented along with computational data that help elucidate the efficacy that 1 imparts on Suzuki-Miyaura coupling processes. Moreover, a comparison of the reactions with 1 and with 2-(2?,4?,6?-triisopropylbiphenyl)diphenylphosphine (2) is presented that is informative in determining the relative importance of ligand bulk and electron-donating ability in the high activity of catalysts derived from ligands of this type. Further, when the aryl bromide becomes too hindered, an interesting C-H bond functionalization-cross-coupling sequence intervenes to provide product in high yield.

The reactivity of the sigma,pi-furyl complex [Fe2(CO) 6(m-Fu)(mu-PFu2)] (1) towards PPh3 and a range of bidentate phosphines has been studied and a number of different reaction products have been identified. With PPh3, carbonyl substitution affords [Fe2(CO)5(PPh3)(mu-Fu) (m-PFu2)] (2) in which the new phosphine is coordinated to the iron center that is sigma-coordinated by the bridging furyl moiety. With small bite-angle diphosphines – bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) and 1,8-bis(diphenylphosphino)naphthalene (dppn) – carbonyl substitution and migratory carbonyl insertion result to give the furyleacyl complexes with bridging, [Fe2(CO)4(mu-dppm)(m-O=C-Fu)(mu-PFu 2)] (3), or chelating, [Fe2(CO)4(kappa 2-dppn)(mu=OCeFu)(mu-PFu2)] (4), diphosphines, respectively. With the more flexible diphosphines Ph2P(CH 2)nPPh2 (n = 2, dppe, n = 3, dppp), the cyclometallated products [Fe2(CO)5{mu, kappa2-C6H4PPh(CH2) nPPh2}(mu-PFu2)] (n = 2, 5; n = 3, 6) are isolated as a result of carbonyl substitution and furan elimination, and a similar complex [Fe2(CO)5{mu,kappa2-C 6H4PPh(C6H4)PPh2}(mu- PFu2)] (7) is generated from the more rigid diphosphine bis(diphenylphosphino) benzene (dppb). Synergy between Experimental and Computational Chemistry Reveals the Mechanism of Decomposition of Nickel-Ketene Complexes

A series of (dppf)Ni(ketene) complexes were synthesized and fully characterized. In the solid state, the complexes possess eta2-(C,O) coordination of the ketene in an overall planar configuration. They display similar structure in solution, except in some cases, the eta2-(C,C) coordination mode is also detected. A combination of kinetic analysis and DFT calculations reveals the complexes undergo thermal decomposition by isomerization from eta2-(C,O) to eta2-(C,C) followed by scission of the C=C bond, which is usually rate limiting and results in an intermediate carbonyl carbene complex. Subsequent rearrangement of the carbene ligand is rate limiting for electron poor and sterically large ketenes, and results in a carbonyl alkene complex. The alkene readily dissociates, affording alkenes and (dppf)Ni(CO)2. Computational modeling of the decarbonylation pathway with partial phosphine dissociation reveals the barrier is reduced significantly, explaining the instability of ketene complexes with monodentate phosphines.
