A series of phosphine-functionalized hydrazone/thiosemicarbazone ligands and their corresponding ruthenium(II) carbonyl complexes of the type [RuCl(CO)(AsPh3)(L)] (1-5) [L = 2-(2-(diphenylphosphino)benzylidene)benzoic acid hydrazone (PNO-BHy), 2-(2-(diphenylphosphino)benzylidene)nicotinic acid hydrazone (PNO-NHy), 2-(2-(diphenylphosphino)benzylidene)-2-furoic hydrazone (PNO-FHy), 2-(2-(diphenylphosphino)benzylidene)-4-ethyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (PNS-EtTs), 2-(2-(diphenylphosphino)benzylidene)-4-cyclohexyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (PNS-CyTs)] have been synthesized based on the ligands with different electronic and steric effects. These complexes were characterized by elemental analyses and various spectral methods. The solid-state structure of the complex 4 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. In all of the complexes, the ligand was bound to the Ru(II) center via the PNO/PNS donor atoms. All the ruthenium(II) complexes were demonstrated as highly efficient catalysts for the synthesis of secondary amines/amides by the coupling of primary amines/amides with alcohols at low catalyst loading, and the maximum yield was obtained up to 98%. The N-alkylation reaction can be readily carried out under moderate conditions, and release of water is the sole byproduct. In addition, the effects of substituents on the ligand, solvents, base and catalyst loading on the catalytic activity of the complexes have been investigated. Advantageously, only one equivalent of the alcohol was consumed in the process.

Triphenylphosphonium (TPP+) species comprising multiple charges, i.e., bis-TPP+, are predicted to be superior mitochondrial-targeting vectors and are expected to have mitochondrial accumulations 1000-fold greater than TPP+, the current “gold standard”. However, bis-TPP+ vectors linked by short hydrocarbon chains (n < 5) are unable to be taken up by the mitochondria, thus hindering their development as mitochondrial delivery vectors. Through the incorporation of methylated TPP+ moieties (T*PP+), we successfully enabled the accumulation of bis-TPP+ with a short linker chain in isolated mitochondria, as measured by high performance liquid chromatography. These experimental results are further supported by molecular dynamics and ab initio calculations, revealing the strong correlations between mitochondria uptake and molecular volume, surface area, and chemical hardness. Most notably, the molecular volume has been shown to be a strong predictor of accumulation for both mono- and bis-TPP+ salts. Our study underscores the potential of T*PP+ moieties as alternative mitochondrial vectors to overcome low permeation into the mitochondria. Direct arylation polymerization (DArP), which is a cross-coupling polymerization between a dihaloarene monomer and a non-substituted arene monomer, has attracted widespread attention for conjugated polymer synthesis. In DArP, no prior preparation of arene monomers with organometallic functionalities is necessary, in contrast to typical cross-coupling polymerizations such as the Suzuki and Stille reactions. Furthermore, the low toxicity of the byproducts of DArP contributes to green chemistry. In terms of efficiency and environmental friendliness, these advantages make DArP an attractive next-generation polymer synthetic method. To date, numerous conjugated polymers have been synthesized by DArP. However, many problems remain to be overcome, including better understanding of the correlation between polymer structure and DArP factors, the design of a more efficient DArP system, and so on. Addressing these problems could lead to the establishment of DArP as a viable alternative for conjugated polymer synthesis. We revealed that a variety of conjugated polymers such as donor-acceptor alternating copolymers (arylene diimide-based donor-acceptor alternating copolymers and thienoisoindigo-based donor-acceptor alternating copolymers) and regioregular poly(3-alkylselenophene)s were successfully synthesized by the DArP strategy based on appropriate molecular design and adjustment of the catalytic system. This focus review will describe our recent studies developing the synthesis of novel conjugated polymers via DArP.

The mechanism of Pd-catalyzed, Friedel-Crafts intermolecular acylation of arenes to ketones was comprehensively investigated by using DFT calculations. The calculated results revealed that this transformation was composed of several key steps: C-I bond oxidative addition, CO insertion, reductive elimination and C-H bond functionalization. Of these steps, the last was found to be the rate-determining step, and it occurred much more easily with strongly electrophilic aroyl triflate compared to other resultant counterparts. In addition, our calculation provides a rationale for experimental findings that simple Pd salts exhibit superior catalytic abilities compared to phosphine-ligated Pd catalysts.

Hydride transfer between transition metal hydride complexes and carbon dioxide is a known reaction, where the thermodynamically favored direction of hydride transfer determines whether CO2 reduction or formate oxidation occurs. Analysis of a growing database of thermodynamic parameters for transition metal hydride complexes now provides clear demarcation between metal hydrides which will function as oxidases and as reductases. The turning point is set at the hydricity of formate (44 kcal/mol in acetonitrile). Here, we utilize hydricity as a framework to reevaluate the catalytic activity and proposed mechanisms for formate oxidation and CO2 reduction with several Ni and Rh P2N2 (P2N2 = 1,5-diaza-3,7-diphosphacyclooctane) complexes, respectively. The series of Ni P2N2 complexes have hydricities between 55-64 kcal/mol and are active catalysts for the electrochemical oxidation of formate. A surprising correlation of increased rate of electrochemical oxidation with decreased overpotential, nu, is observed. The Rh P2N2 complexes have hydricities between 28-34 kcal/mol and function as hydrogenation catalysts for the reduction of CO2 to formate. Learning from the reactivity of these catalysts, design principles for future metal hydride complexes are presented that focus on the ultimate goal of catalyst optimization for improved energy efficiency (overpotential) with high selectivity (Faradaic efficiency) for both formate oxidation and CO2 reduction to formate.

Methyl gerfelin derivatives, each having an amine-terminated tri(ethylene glycol) linker at the peripheral position, were designed and systematically synthesized. These “TEGylated” derivatives were then subjected to a structure-activity relationship (SAR) study to examine their glyoxalase 1-inhibition activity and binding affinity toward the three binding proteins identified. Among the derivatives synthesized, that with a NH2-TEG linker at the C6-methyl group showed the most potent glyoxalase 1-inhibiting activity and glyoxalase 1 selectivity. These results indicated that derivatization at the C6-methyl group would be suitable for the further development of selective glyoxalase 1 inhibitors.

The reactions of sodium (aza-15-crown-5)dithiocarbamate with [AuClL] precursors lead to mono-, di-, or hexanuclear derivatives depending on L. The homoleptic hexanuclear gold(I) cluster [Au6(S2CNC 10H20O4)6] is formed by displacement of the chloride and isocyanide ligands in [AuCl(CN(2,6-Me2C 6H3))]. X-ray diffraction studies show a novel geometry in gold cluster chemistry where the six gold atoms display a cyclohexane-like geometry in a chair conformation with Au-Au-Au angles of 117.028(9), two short gold-gold distances of 2.9289(5) A, and bidentate bridging dithiocarbamate ligands. The molecular structure shows a crown of gold atoms surrounded by crown ethers. This derivative luminesces at 569 nm at room temperature in the solid state. A dinuclear isomer [AU2(S2CNC 10H20O4)2] had been reported previously and was obtained by reaction with [AuCl(SMe2)]. The mechanism to obtain the hexanuclear derivative involves a mononuclear intermediate [Au(S2CNC10H20O4)(CNR)] for which the X-ray structure shows a short gold-gold distance of 3.565 A with the two molecules in an anti configuration. Phosphine gold(I) mononuclear derivatives [Au(S2CNC10H20O4) (PR3)] (R = Me, Ph, both characterized by X-ray diffraction) and dinuclear diphosphine derivatives [{Au(S2CNC10H 20O4)}2(mu-P-P)] (P-P = dppm, bis(diphenylphosphinomethane); dppp, 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphinopropane); and dppf, 1,1?-bis(diphenylphosphinoferrocene)) are also reported. In the mononuclear complexes, the molecular structure confirms that the dithiocarbamato ligand is mainly acting as monodentate, with a second longer Au-S distance of 3.197 (PMe3), 2.944(4) (PPh3), and 2.968 A (CNR). Three phosphine complexes are emissive at 562 (PMe3), 528 (PPh 3), and 605 nm (dppm), at 77 K. X-ray diffraction studies of the dppm derivative show gold-gold intramolecular contacts of 3.0972(9) A (3.2265(10) A for a second independent molecule) and basically monodentate coordination of the dithiocarbamato ligands. All the complexes extract sodium and potassium salts from aqueous solutions. The diphosphine derivatives are noticeably better extractors than the monophosphino derivatives, mainly for potassium salts.
